The Foundation for Dane County Parks has secured funding through Ascendium Education Group to support the expansion of Dane County Parks Youth Volunteers for Conservation Program into a Conservation Career Pathways Program for teens and young adults.

MADISON, WI - August 25, 2025 - Dane County Parks is excited to launch the Conservation Career Pathways Program, designed to provide teenagers and young adults with the skills, certifications, connections, and hands-on experience needed for economic mobility within the natural resource management field, as well as general labor trades like electrical, plumbing, and construction. This program is made possible through the financial support from the Foundation for Dane County Parks and Ascendium Education Group.

Building on the success of the Youth Volunteers for Conservation Program, which has attracted over 100 participants to date, this new Conservation Career Pathways was created based on feedback from participants on how to grow the program. In addition to gaining real world experience, building their resume, and receiving references for future jobs, participants will receive trainings like Dane County Parks’ Certified Land Steward, FISTA Chainsaw Safety, and prescribed fire, as well as a certificate of program completion.

“The Conservation Career Pathways Program will open doors for young people to gain the skills, confidence, and real-world experience they need to succeed in conservation and the skilled trades,” said Dane County Executive Melissa Agard. “By investing in our youth, we’re cultivating the next generation of environmental stewards and building a stronger, more sustainable future for our community.”

Despite an interest in being part of the climate change solution and the sudden surge in green jobs available, only 29% of young people indicate they feel prepared for a natural resources career. Dane County, Wisconsin, has a need for education and workforce training for learners from low-income backgrounds in conservation and sustainability, and there is a global need to develop the next generation of green job leaders.

“Dane County Parks not only make our community more beautiful, they also create opportunities for young people to build skills that can shape their futures,” said Brett Lindquist, Vice President of Communications and Community Engagement at Ascendium. “The Conservation Career Pathways Program is a perfect example, pairing hands-on experience in our parks with industry-recognized certifications that open doors to family-sustaining careers. We’re proud to support a program that strengthens both our workforce and the place we call home.”

Dane County Parks strives to removes barriers for participants in the Conservation Career Pathway program. It is intentionally designed to be culturally-competent and inclusive. Dane County Parks will provide competitive pay for internships, volunteer opportunities that fit around most teens’ work schedules, transportation support, and equipment and supplies. This program aims to serve at least 500 teens and young adults ages 13-24 through the summer of 2027.

“This program not only builds on the Youth Volunteers for Conservation Program, but builds on our community center partnership program, Get Outside!” said Lael Pascual, Engagement & Visitor Services Manager. “The Conservation Career Pathways Program will continue to foster young people’s relationships in the outdoors who may not have access to our parks, natural areas, or conservation careers in the past.”
