Land & Water Resources
The Dane County Land & Water Resources Department and the Madison Area Municipal Stormwater Partnership (MAMSWaP) are accepting applications for their Free Native Plants for Schools and Community Projects Program and the Storm Drain Mural Program.
“Protecting our lakes, rivers, and streams is essential to the health of Dane County and the people who call it home,” said Dane County Executive Melissa Agard. “These programs provide schools and community groups hands-on opportunities to help care for the natural areas that sustain our community.”
Free Native Plants for Schools and Community Projects
The Free Native Plants for Schools and Community Projects program provides schools and community groups with native plants at no cost. Native plants play a critical role in managing stormwater by increasing infiltration and reducing soil compaction through their deep root systems. This reduces runoff and prevents pollutants from entering local waterways. Once established, native plants require minimal maintenance beyond occasional weeding, while also enhancing landscapes and providing essential habitat for wildlife and pollinators.
Since the program began in 2016, more than 52,000 plants have been distributed to 230 different groups, including schools, neighborhood associations and community centers. Groups located in Dane County are encouraged to apply. Applications are due January 31.
Storm Drain Mural Program
The Storm Drain Mural Program uses public art to educate residents about stormwater pollution. Water that enters a storm drain flows into nearby lakes, rivers, and streams, often carrying trash, soil, and other pollutants. The goal of these colorful murals is to capture the attention of those who pass by, help them understand where the stormwater that enters their storm drain flows, and get them thinking about actions they can take to ensure that “only rain goes down the storm drain”.
Since 2018, the program has funded more than 50 murals in 15 Dane County communities. Municipalities, schools, organizations, and community groups within Dane County are invited to apply. Applicants may participate in the mural design and painting process or select a pre-designed mural. The application form is available on the program webpage along with a map of existing murals. Applications are due February 15.
