MADISON, WI – Dane County Regional Airport (DCRA) continues to be a powerful economic engine for south central Wisconsin, generating nearly $2.6 billion in total economic impact and supporting 10,176 total jobs across the region in 2024, according to a newly released economic impact study.

The study, conducted by Tourism Economics, examined economic impacts across Dane County and seven neighboring counties, highlighting the airport’s crucial role in the health and growth of the regional economy. In addition to job creation, the airport supported:

  • $2.6 billion in total economic impact

  • $730.4 million in wages and salaries

  • $491.2 million in total tax revenue, including $337.7 million in state and local taxes.

The study also found that for every $1 of direct business sales, the airport generates $1.52 in total economic impact, underscoring the ripple effect of airport activity throughout the local economy.

“This study confirms that Dane County Regional Airport is a powerful economic engine for our region,” said Dane County Executive Melissa Agard. “From supporting more than 10,000 jobs to generating nearly half a billion dollars in tax revenue, the airport strengthens the competitiveness of local businesses, attracts tourists, and connects our community to opportunity. Continued investment in our airport is an investment in the long-term prosperity of Dane County and the surrounding communities.”

Direct economic impacts alone reached nearly $1.7 billion in business sales, supporting 5,512 jobs and $425.3 million in wages and salaries. Airport operations and tenants accounted for more than 92% of the direct impact, while visitor spending contributed an estimated $128.4 million in off-airport spending in lodging, retail, food and beverage, recreation, and local transportation. Indirect and induced impacts were also analyzed, such as those that occur as airport-related businesses purchase goods and services and as employees spend their wages locally.

“Dane County Regional Airport is far more than a transportation hub. It is a catalyst for economic growth,” said Mark Papko, airport director. “Every flight supports jobs, local businesses, and tax revenue that benefit our entire region. As we continue to modernize and expand service, we are strengthening our role as a gateway for commerce, tourism, and innovation in south central Wisconsin.”

The airport’s impact reaches well beyond aviation. Nearly $1 billion in business sales occur in sectors outside transportation and warehousing, including real estate, finance and insurance, professional services, accommodation and food services, and health care.

The study also reflects recent investments at the airport, including a 2023 renovation that added six new gates and modernized facilities, positioning the airport for continued growth as passenger volumes are at an all-time high and continuing to rise.
