ATV Fatality Crash

 

On Tuesday, February 24, 2026, at approximately 7:06 p.m., Dane County Sheriff’s Office deputies, along with the Oregon Police Department, Fire, and EMS, responded to a report of a fatal ATV crash near State Highway 138 in the Town of Rutland.

 

Preliminary investigation indicates a 55-year-old man was operating an ATV on private property when the ATV rolled in a cornfield, ejecting the operator. The operator suffered a serious head injury and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The operator was not wearing a helmet, and alcohol appears to be a factor in the crash.

 

The Dane County Sheriff’s Office Marine and Trail Enforcement, Investigative Services Bureau, and Crime Scene Unit all responded to the scene along with assistance from the Department of Natural Resources. The crash remains under investigation by the Dane County Sheriff’s Office.

 

The name of the deceased is not being released at this time pending notifications.
