One million dollars in upgrades from the county to make a stretch of County Highway J (CTH J) safer for area motorists and cyclists are now complete, Dane County Executive Joe Parisi announced today.

The upgrades to CTH J,  from the unincorporated Village of Riley to Old Military Road,  include a resurfaced road and the addition of bike lanes.

“These improvements to County Highway J will make it easier and safer for motorists and cyclists to share this well-traveled road,” said Parisi.  “With easier access to the popular Military Ridge Trail, even more of Dane County’s residents and visitors will be able to get outdoors and take advantage of our county’s many recreation opportunities.”

The new bike lanes are a component of the County Executive’s ongoing work to increase safety for those who travel on Dane County’s roads through his 2012 BikeDane initiatives.  The stretch of highway is very popular for area cyclists making their way to the Military Ridge Trail.

"Dane County is the most bike-friendly county in the state, and yet there is so much more to be done,"  said Kevin Hardman, Executive Director of the Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin.  "Thanks to County Executive Parisi's leadership, Dane County is a world-class place to ride a bike."

Parisi’s BikeDane initiatives support the economic, health, transportation and recreational benefits that bicycling provides to Dane County residents. Bicycling is very important to Dane County for the economic return it brings in jobs, tourism expenditures and sales tax revenue.

The CTH J project is one of several major improvements to county infrastructure approved by the County Executive in his 2012 budget, which included the county’s share of $5.2 million in road improvements.

Other projects include major upgrades to University Avenue/CTH MS, Monona Drive/CTH BB, and the newly completed improvements to Fish Hatchery Road/CTH D.
