County Board To Hold Public Hearing on the Proposed 2014 Budget

The Dane County Board of Supervisors will hold a special meeting to take public testimony on the proposed 2014 Dane County budget on Thursday, October 24th at 7:00 p.m. in room 201 of the City-County Building. The public is invited to testify for or against items in the County Executive’s proposed budget. Testimony is also welcome on any amendments to that proposal.
The proposed 2014 Dane County budget authorizes a total of $553.1 million for capital and operating expenditures. The budget is financed by $358.5 million in outside revenues and borrowing, $48.0 million of sales tax, and $147.9 million in county tax levy funds. The proposed budget increases the county’s net property tax rate from $3.01 in 2013 to $3.10 for 2014, which will be an increase of $18.39 on the average Madison home (valued at $230,831).
Some of the larger items are $8 million toward replacement or remodeling of county jail facilities, a $2 million SMART fund for sustainability projects projected to save $5 million in operating costs and an expansion of the current manure digester program.
“This is a chance for the public to express their concerns to the County Board and influence the process,” said County Board Chair John Hendrick. “Tell us what you like, what you don’t like and what we missed. We’ll try to make it better.”
County Board committees will complete their consideration of amendments to the proposed budget over the next few weeks. The full Board will take up the budget on November 18th. The October 24thmeeting will also feature the confirmation and swearing in of a supervisor for District 14, replacing Supervisor Melanie Hampton who resigned effective October 17th.
