The Dane County Board of Supervisors last night unanimously approved the appointment of George Gillis to represent the 14th District on Madison’s far southwest side, filling the seat vacated by Melanie Hampton, who resigned when her family relocated to Utah. County Judge Rhonda Lanford immediately administered Gillis the Oath of Office as his wife and newborn daughter looked on.

“I feel really honored to be appointed to the County Board,” said Gillis, 31. “Supervisor Hampton was a great public servant, and I look forward to filling her shoes for the remainder of the term.

“I was impressed by his engagement in his neighborhood and his familiarity with the legislative process,” said Hendrick.

Gillis studied environmental policy and government at Lawrence University in Appleton. He has worked on public policy development and constituent services in the Capitol, including stints in the offices of Representative Kelda Helen Roys and former Representative Thomas Nelson, who is now Outagamie County Executive.

“I believe that my style of straightforwardness and honesty is severely lacking in politics,” said Gillis. “I believe I can bring a very diverse voice to County Government. My priorities for my term are to continue to provide the high level of services our citizens expect and deserve, while being a good steward of tax dollars.”

Gillis will stand for election to a full term in April.
