Dane County Land and Water Resources Department to Host Public Information Meeting for Update on Phase One Lower Yahara River Trail Project

Dane County has been working together with the City of Madison, City of Monona, Village of McFarland, Wisconsin and Southern Railroad Company, the Wisconsin DNR, the Wisconsin DOT, consulting firms Graef and Great Lakes Archaeological Resource Center, Inc., and the Wisconsin Historical Society to prepare construction drawings and a draft Environmental Report for Phase 1 of the Lower Yahara River Trail. 

 

The trail will be a combination of at-grade paved surface, boardwalks and bridges that will span from the Capital City Trail at Lake Farm Road to McDaniel Park in the Village of McFarland. Provision of this trail is anticipated to reduce trespassing issues and improve safety on the Wisconsin and Southern Railroad Company active rail line that parallels portions of the proposed trail.  Provisions for shore fishing near the railroad trestle on Lake Waubesa are also included in the trail plans.  The trail will provide a major off road bicycle commuting link from southeastern Dane County to the downtown Madison area.   

 

A public information meeting to present the preferred alternative trail alignment, recommendations of the draft Environmental Report and project timeline will be held on Thursday, February  27th, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. at the Lussier Family Heritage Center, 3101 Lake Farm Road, Madison, WI 53711.  The parking lot, meeting room and center facilities are wheelchair accessible.  Persons with concern for or knowledge about historic buildings and structures and archaeological sites are encouraged to attend this meeting or provide comments to the local units of government or the consultant.
