Airport To Secure Funding For Precision Instrument Approach

Airfield Improvements Will Increase Aircraft Operations During Inclement Weather

Madison, WI – Dane County Regional Airport will be awarded State of Wisconsin Airport Improvement Funds to acquire equipment and make airfield improvements for upgrading the current instrument landing system. 

The instrument landing system upgrade is a multi-year project which will improve the ability of aircraft to land during all types of inclement weather.

“Our weather changes quickly, and investing in this state of the art technology means safer landings and takeoffs for pilots and their passengers from our airport,” County Executive Joe Parisi said. 

The new Category II instrument landing system provides both vertical and horizontal information to on-board computer systems to align an aircraft with the centerline of a runway under extreme weather conditions that which would normally prohibit a pilot from landing.

“We constantly seek to keep our airport top notch for the more than 5,500 travelers who use it each day and for the many businesses who rely on air service to and from our communities,” said Airport Director Bradley Livingston, AAE.  Improved instrument landing equipment provides more reliable operations during inclement weather.

The low visibility project was started in 2010 in cooperation with the Federal Aviation Administration and the State of Wisconsin with an anticipated project completion in 2016.
