Dane County Parks planning staff have been working on a draft master plan that will propose future management, recreation use and park facility development for Mendota County Park.  The County currently owns approximately 19 acres within the recreation park boundary which is located in the Town of Westport at 5133 County Highway M along the north shore of Lake Mendota.

“We are very excited about ideas in the plan to improve pedestrian connectivity to surrounding parks and neighborhoods. The proposed walking trails will provide park users of all ages a public space to stay fit and active,” said Dane County Park Commission Chair Bill Lunney.

The park currently offers a 30 site campground, 5 boat camping sites, picnic shelters, a playground, beach and small craft boat landing facility.  Mendota County Park is used extensively by ice anglers for lake access in the winter and by a variety of water recreation enthusiasts during the spring and summer.  Camping is also very popular at the park from Memorial Day through Labor Day.  Some of the improvements to the park that are being considered in the draft master plan include replacement of a picnic shelter, reorganization of the campground area, improved shoreline access, park health and wellness facilities, community garden space, natural play areas, walking paths,  parking and storm water treatment improvements, and enhancing bicycle/pedestrian access to the park.

“The water filtration system and beach restoration projects completed in May at the park have already proven to be a huge success and extremely popular for parents with younger children,” said Dane County Executive Joe Parisi.

A public information meeting to review draft recommendations of the plan and gather input will be held on Wednesday, August 17th , 7:00pm at the Peace Thru Christ Lutheran School, 3232 W Point Rd, Middleton, WI  53562.

The draft master plan concepts will be available for review on the Dane County Parks website at: https://parks-lwrd.countyofdane.com/Information/Planning-Development/Mendota-County-Park-Master-Plan/Public-Info-Materials
