Dane County to Open New Trout Stream for Public Fishing

Permanent Easement Provides Recreational Access to Creek between Verona and Belleville

 

Over 2,200 feet of a stream that feeds into the Sugar River will soon be available for public fishing access, County Executive Joe Parisi announced today. Under a resolution being introduced to the County Board of Supervisors tomorrow evening, the county would acquire a permanent easement along Milum Creek, off Fritz Road in the Town of Montrose.

 

“These are the types of projects that keep families and businesses coming to Dane County faster than anywhere else in Wisconsin,” Parisi said. “Having the opportunity to take a few hours or even a day away and spend time enjoying the amazing outdoor resources our county has to offer is integral to our quality of life.”

 

Milum Creek is classified as an “Outstanding and Exceptional Resource Water” by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. This easement is located near the headwaters of Milum Creek and is near other easements established along the Sugar River in recent years to improve opportunities for fishing.

 

The project is the latest in Dane County’s popular streambank easement program which to date has permanently protected over 20 miles of streams countywide since the initiative began in 2007. The program keeps the land in private ownership, while opening public access to some of the county’s finest trout fisheries.

 

Pending final review and approval by the County Board, the purchase price of the proposed easement is $35,310.
