University Avenue in Middleton and Jefferson Street in Oregon Are Now Open
Today, Dane County Executive Joe Parisi was joined by City of Middleton officials to cut the ribbon for the recently reconstructed University Avenue. The $3 million construction project took place between Allen Boulevard and Park Street. The newly redone highway now features an on-road bike path that eventually connects to the Pheasant Branch Trail.
“Reconstructing the county’s aging highways improves public safety,” said Dane County Executive Parisi. “The conclusion of the University Avenue construction project means greater safety for motorists and bicyclists when traveling through this well-trafficked area.”
Crews were able to replace University Avenue’s old curbs, gutters, and deteriorated concrete pavement while upgrading pedestrian and bicycle facilities. The new on-road path runs from Allen Boulevard to the Branch Street intersection and connects to other City of Middleton on-road bike lanes.
The County and City are planning Phase 2 of the University Avenue project with a probable start date in 2019. The project will be from the end of this year’s project (approximately Park Street) to Cayuga Court.
“Improving our city’s streets is my major goal as mayor,” added Mayor Gurdip Brar. “I’m very pleased that the City was able to partner with Dane County for this project. University Avenue is a major artery in our transportation network, and we’re looking forward to continuing the project further west in 2019.”
A combination of Dane County employees, City of Middleton employees, and private contractors completed the project on time and under budget. The $3 million project was equally funded between Dane County and the City of Middleton.
In addition to the CTH/University Avenue project, the CTH CC/Jefferson Street project in the Village of Oregon was also completed in time for Labor Day weekend. This segment of highway was under construction from Main Street to Ash Street. The project began with Village utility work and ended with County crews excavating the roadway and installing a new base course. Asphalt pavement was then added to surface the roadway.
Reconstruction for CTH CC/Jefferson Street was completed under the project's $400,000 budget and was funded equally between the Village of Oregon and Dane County.
Crews will wrap up minor finishing work on both highways over the next few weeks.
